The distillery opened in March 2014 and has seen more than 1 million visitors since that time. At the distillery, visitors are able to taste all nine flavors of Sugarlands Shine, tour the still house, listen to live Americana, country, and bluegrass music, and book outdoor excursions— among other things.
The distillery is located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a popular travel destination near the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Gatlinburg’s numerous distilleries and wineries make it a sought after location for spirits enthusiasts. Sugarlands Distilling Co. is currently ranked as the #2 destination in Gatlinburg on TripAdvisor, second only to the national park.
As of October 26, 2015, Sugarlands Distilling Co. received 2,052 five-star reviews making it the most highly rated distillery experience in the U.S., according to the website. Only Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, Ireland had more five-star reviews internationally, at the time.
Sugarlands Distilling Co. currently distributes its moonshine in 19 states in the U.S. Recently, the company announced an ambitious whiskey project that seeks to create several types of traditional and modern whiskey offerings.
The company partnered earlier this year with Lost Spirits Technology in California in an attempt to create a rye whiskey by using an advanced aging reactor called THEA One. The reactor is capable of replicating the chemical make up and taste profile of a 20-year-old rye whiskey in just six to eight days.
